Mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions that affect a person’s thinking, and behavior. For instance, examples of mental illness may include depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and addiction — whether it be a substance or behavior. Many different factors can accredit to a person having a mental illness. Whether it be a simple hormone imbalance, genetics, or an emotionally and or physically damaging occurrence. Similar to the wide spectrum of mental illnesses, there are several different ways an individual can be treated. Examples include, medication, therapy, alternative schooling, or in-home care. Approximately 26.2 percent (about 1 in 4) of Americans eighteen and older suffer from a mental disorder. It is incumbent that the American population begins to sharpen their resources, and improve not only their modes of detection for mental illness, but also move to break the prejudices against those diagnosed. The United Statesâ⠂¬â„¢s population’s knowledge about the detection, warning signs, and causes of mental illness is more or less nonexistent. A survey released by the American Psychiatric Association found that approximately half of the general public — 44 percent — reported knowing little to practically nothing about mental illness. Although, when asked if learning about mental illness would be helpful, 84 percent answered yes.
